There are more than 80 children currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant at Boston Children’s Hospital. Each April, the Pediatric Transplant Center celebrates National Donate Life Month with stories and events to encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.

This year, the Pediatric Transplant Center team focused on our amazing patients and their milestones made possible #becauseofadonor.

We learned how Katelyn’s life saved Hannah’s, and bonded their two families together.

An organ donor mother shared her firsthand account of their family’s decision to donate life.

Additional celebrations included:

  • a special Nursing Grand Rounds, where patients, families and an organ-donor family shared stories about the impact organ donation has had on their lives, followed by a Donate Life flag-raising ceremony
  • Blue and Green Day, on which staff wore their best blue and green to raise awareness
  • a Donate Life booth in the Fegan elevator lobby, where hospital visitors and staff could learn about organ donation, register as an organ donor or donate an old cellphone to be resold with proceeds benefiting the Children’s Organ Transplant Association

These stories and celebrations, together with signs throughout the hospital and an all-staff email encouraging employee participation, helped register 60 donors in one month!
